I can't tell you how many times someone has said to me, "But you do more than Reiki right?"
Well, yes and no. After all "Reiki" refers to both the traditional healing modality and also the Divinely guided energy you experience in this system.
As a deeply spiritual and intuitive practice, it is sometimes challenging to express just exactly what I do, to be honest, but this is the path of Reiki - one of questioning and unfolding.
Before we go further, it may be helpful for me to explain the roots of Reiki as a healing modality.
The name Reiki refers to the healing modality Japanese founder Mikao Usui developed, drawing from years of study and teachings in many different traditional Japanese wisdom teachings, spiritual practices and various other Japanese modalities.
The spiritual practice of Reiki was brought to the Western World by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman born in Hawaii. She was initiated to Reiki by Chujiro Hayashi in Tokyo, Japan and became a Master Practitioner.
Over time, Reiki has been mass disseminated so that millions of people have been able to experience, with EASE, the ability to connect with this Divinely guided energy.
This has created opportunity for the average person,  like myself, to access a healing system that might otherwise have been available only to the wealthy (back in the day the fee for Reiki Master Teacher was reported to be $10,000 in Takata's system) and to the East (the Japanese roots).
Of course there are drawbacks as well for this open access! The main one being a full comprehension/training in the roots of the originating system. Hence, over time many offshoots of Reiki have arisen as people naturally try and fill in the blanks so to speak.
One paradox is the variety of what is offered as "Reiki" and so there is great confusion.
Yet, isn't that the path?
The search for a deeper meaning?
In that sense Reiki as we know it today in all its forms is providing a path for just that - we get to decide what is true and what is not! What resonates and what does not.
And despite the many versions of Reiki, it still works in its primary goal of connecting us with the energy of the Divine and the spiritual path of unfolding.
Un-freaking believable, right?!
What an ingenious healing modality founder, Mikao Usui, created to help us bridge beliefs that are in our way of knowing our true light!
I have so much respect for the roots, culture, founder and tradition of this Japanese healing modality. I feel it is important for each of us to continue to explore and learn as much as we can about the traditional roots.
But I also recognize that as a white Canadian woman, my roots and social conditioning are vastly different than that of the originating culture of traditional Reiki.
There is no way that I can truly embody a full comprehension/wisdom of Reiki in this context and that's why I say, with great respect, that I am a non-traditional Reiki Master Teacher.
I have explored this for a few years and am finally coming to clarity around my role as a Reiki practioner in the context of my social reality. I feel this is a very important aspect to explore for each and every one of us.
